NEUSS RACETRACK PARK

ONE PHASE
REALIZATION COMPETITION

3. PRIZE

The racecourse site is an important constant in the history of Neuss. Four design elements are proposed that take up and further develop historical references, morphology and existing elements of the site:

  • green vortex: the shape and basic structure of the site are retained and form the system of order for the new park. The vortex integrates the wooded area, the topography and the former racecourse. In addition, it organises and hierarchises new uses, additional path relationships and new tree plantings. The vortex ties in with the history of the racecourse; however, it also determines the perception of the space.
  • Meadow tableau: The open centre is characteristic of the racecourse. It offers orientation and emphasises the generous layout of the park. A meadow path encloses the green centre.
  • Wooded border: The grounds of the racecourse are bordered by a circumferential border. It is composed of dense wooded areas, interspersed open spaces and ensembles of main and ancillary buildings. The majority of the garden show areas are accommodated in the area of the fringe in order to keep the meadow tableau open.

  • Traverses: Four traverses each lead from the adjacent neighbourhoods into the parking area. Their location and connection serves to link the adjacent neighbourhoods more strongly with the city centre and the surrounding urban and landscape spaces. In order to maintain the open park centre, the traverses deliberately meet in a staggered manner.
