REALIZATION COMPETITION

3. PRIZE

The renewal and expansion of the public park in Marl is associated with special opportunities. To this purpose, it is proposed to divide the Volkspark into

  • an inner, natural park of the scenes
  • and two park wings: the intensive wing with areas for sport and play as well as events and the extensive wing with areas for the development of ecological diversity and retention.

The new wings link the park more strongly to the surrounding urban fabric, make it easier to find and thus increase its importance for the city as a whole. At the same time, the expanded public park with its contemporary mix of uses is aimed at users from the entire urban area.

The public park and the surrounding urban spaces will be more closely linked. In addition to opening up the park, orientation and the feeling of safety within the park area will be improved. To this end, a clearly legible hierarchy of paths will be established:

  • Circular paths: The Park of Scenes is enclosed by a chain of three circular paths. They each emphasise three different park images.
  • Mule path: The transition between the wooded fringe and the sunny park meadows is emphasised by a separate path.
  • Discovery path: The Weierbach is accompanied by a discovery path. It leads through a sequence of clearings and links different stations of environmental education as a nature trail.
