The inner city of Emden is formed by a compact structure of streets and squares. The areas Neuer Markt, Zwischen Beiden Sielen/Pottgießerstraße and Zwischen Beiden Märkten constitute important stepping stones between Stadtring and Ratsdelft. Hence the reorganization of these areas is related to a number of urban design requirements. These include:

  • An increase in the quality of stay,
  • a qualification of the city center as a commercial, residential, work and adventure area and
  • an improvement in the accessibility of the existing cultural and retail offers.

The proximity to the city harbor and the materials and color nuances used are important starting points for the design concept. A coherent surface comprises the areas and brings the small-scale façade sequence of eaves and gables into vision.

Within the contiguous surfaces, special staying areas are inserted. They pick up on the main road to the Ratsdelf, forming successive stepping stones towards the inner city.

The proposed design elements can be transferred to the adjoining urban areas in further stages of construction. As modular components, they can be individually adapted to the requirements of the different urban areas. This allows for a step-by-step approach towards a more cohesive urban landscape.
