The Berlin-Spandau shipping canal is currently a caesura within the urban layout. The shorelines are hardly connected to the surrounding city structure. In response to this, the urban development concept for the Europacity provides for corridors and squares as well as bridges, which are oriented orthogonally to the waterfront’s course. As a fine-meshed network, they link the quarters around Heidestraße with the shipping channel and the opposite city side. Starting points for the design concept are:

  • The formation of a recognizable shoreline, taking into account the opposite side of the river and the alignements along the bank,
  • the linking of waterfront and urban areas and
  • the integration and accentuation of the existing patchwork on different shore surfaces and profiles.

Existing and planned bridges divide the elongated waterfront into five sections. Thus a new bank section with a respective character opens up along the shoreline. In synopsis with the opposing riverside, they form the starting point for creative interventions.
