The Theaterplatz Gütersloh is the prelude and conclusion of a sequence of different urban spaces. In contrast to the adjoining green areas, the theater square is to receive a modest urban atmosphere. Therefore, four spatial design elements are proposed:
- A consistent plaza surface,
- the addition of the missing plaza framing,
- the emphasis on entrance and transitions areas and
- special pocket lounge areas.
The buildings shaping the plaza differ in their urban-spatial effects. By means of a uniform pavement they are to be more closely related to each other. The currently missing southern and western plaza framings are made up by a row of trees and one of mast lights.
Thus the visual connection to the city theater and the historical water tower is being preserved. The staying areas on the theater square are shaped as elongated ‘islands’. They complement the foyer areas of the city hall and the theater.
