1. PRIZE

The August-Bebel-Plaza is one of the central places in the Wattenscheid city centre and forms the entrance gate to the pedestrian zone. The square serves as a junction and interchange and at the same time has important traffic and movement functions.

As a shaded square covered with trees, August-Bebel-Plaza will have a deliberately green profile in the future - complementing the square at the ‚Alter Markt‘ with its paved surfaces. In contrast to the market square, which facilitates events such as markets and city festivals, August-Bebel-Plaza will in future become a place to stay.

The square will be given a new structural setting at its northern edge. Somewhat reduced in size, the square will fit into the scale of the neighbourhood and the city centre. A separate urban building block is proposed that picks up on the existing building lines and heights.

A green screen of large trees provides a generous canopy of shade. The deliberately irregularly placed trees accentuate the area selectively and provide a varied light and shade situation. The square area is divided by green clods.

The surfaces can store rainwater and thus have a positive effect on the local microclimate. At the same time, they emphasise the special quality of the square. Bordered by a seating edge, they frame grass and shrub plantings. This gives the urban space an independent atmosphere. In addition, a multitude of seating and recreational opportunities are created for people changing trains, passers-by and residents.
