The district of Windeck-Schladern is situated in a landscape that is strongly shaped by the course of the river Sieg. During the industrial revolution, the river was strongly reshaped in order to facilitate transport and energy production in some parts of its course. For the rearrangement of the area, three spatial interventions are proposed:

  • As a central axis, the railway embankment is to be integrated more effectively into the existing road network and the open space fabric.
  • A number of ‘special places’ are to be emphasized in their relationship to the surrounding landscape.
  • The existing network of walking and cycling paths will be expanded and accentuated by distinctive squares at important intersections and forks.

The anthropogenic elements in the Sieg waterfall landscape are to be linked more closely by a visual network. For that to happen, a viewing platform is inserted on the southeastern side of the river, between the railway bridge and the Elmoresstraße bridge. The railway line is to be integrated as a central axis into the existing fabric of open spaces und therefore be enclosed on both sides by a foot and bike path.

The existing gazebo at the Siegwasserfall will be replaced. The new building’s geometry refers to the topography of the opposite hill and offers several visitor the opportunity to experience the view at the same time.

The square in front of the cultural center Kabelmetal is divided into three different sections parallel to the escape of the hall building. A protruding base area takes up on the height difference to the existing building. A relocation of the info pavillon to the Schönecker Weg is proposed. The hall building, the craneway and the infopavillon are joined by a common surface. Furniture especially designed for Windeck emphasizes the Kabelmetal square, the distinctive squares and the new path system.
