Since the early 1980’s, Beijing’s urban structure has heavily changed. One of the less known phenomenons is the transformation of the Danwei settlements of the 1950’s to the 1980’s. Upon the opening of the districts towards the surrounding urban spaces, the character of the places changed severely. Instead of distance and decorative spaces, street and square spaces have emerged.

The potential of these collectively created urban spaces is being depicted by selected case studies based drawings, photographs and interviews.

The examples illustrate different approaches of the development of monofunctional settlements towards mixed-use districts. Yet they also show the stakeholders’ talent for self-organisation and improvisation.
