SCHWEINFURT  LEDWARD BARRACKS

CAMPUS

CLOSED COMPETITION IN
ACCORDANCE WITH RPW

The area of the Ledward Barracks is situated between Niederwerrnerstrasse and Niederwerrner Pfad, two superordinate historical pathways connecting Schweinfurt's inner city and the surrounding landscape spaces. With the establishment of the use of the barracks in the 1930s, the northern part of these connecting paths, the Niederwerrner Pfad, was cut. The revitalization of the area offers the opportunity to reintegrate the long-standing exclave into the surrounding urban and landscape structures.

To do so, an urban structure is proposed, reviving the Niederwerrner Pfad as a superordinate connection between city and landscape. The existing access system of the barracks area is to be continously used. At the same time, as much of the copses as possible is to be respected.

A space-saving access system and a typology as compact as possible are suggested.

Accordingly, a large part of the former barracks area can be unsealed in favor of a spacious green space. The squares and green spaces provided complement the recreational offers of the existing neighbourhoods.
