NEUSTADT IN HOLSTEIN  WEST HARBOUR

URBAN DESIGN

URBAN DESIGN REALIZATION
COMPETITION WITH OPEN SPACE AND
BUILDING CONSTRUCTION PART

The upcoming transformation of the harbour area offers a number of opportunities to the city of Neustadt in Holstein. At the same time, the pending steps cannot be entirely foreseen yet. Accordingly, the urban design concept must allow for future adjustments.

For this purpose, a development framework is proposed that distinguishes between binding specifications and flexible areas. The northern shore of the harbour is bordered by three parallel, elongated areas. Each strip is composed of particular building plots and public spaces. The inserted squares and green spaces bind the straps together. In addition, they link the planned extension of Wieksbergstraße and the accompanying greenway with the harbour.

With the connection between the train station and the port environment, a generous city entrance with a view to the harbour and to the opposite city center evolves. To complement the integration of existing buildings, selected buildings such as the storage buildings and the protected water tower are staged as part of the port silhouette.

Taking into account the context and the existing buildings, each strap is given a respective character. Within the individual building plots, the typologies can be adapted to future objectives and uses. In the midterm, this will ensure the development of a mixture of different uses to stimulate the site.
